Canada has a long and successful history of mining in countries around the world, including Africa. Canadian companies are drawn to Africa by its immense mineral wealth, often seemingly undeterred by legislative headaches, labour difficulties and the lack of infrastructure.
According to Bruce Shapiro, president of the Canada-Southern Africa Chamber of Business, and president of MineAfrica, "Africa’s geology is the main element attracting foreign interest to Africa, as mining here is largely resource-driven. There’s a lot of money in the Congo, for example. That’s a very high-risk jurisdiction but the returns are potentially phenomenal. It attracts so much money because it is so incredibly resource rich.”
